Newbury Elementary School Newbury, MA
DRA provided renovation/addition services for a combined 180-student kindergarten and 620-student population grades 1-6. The design located upper grades in a separate wing connected to a common core containing the gym, cafeteria, auditorium, library, and administrative spaces. The accessible entry lobby ramp provides a tiered display wall for student art. Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels placed on the cylindrical entry lobby wall and corridor walls serve to buffer sound and also provide surfaces to display art. The library, located on the second floor, is open to the corridor to accommodate the principal's concept that it be integrated as an apparent resource as opposed to a space a part from other school activities.
