High Schools are currently undergoing huge change throughout the country. What was once a box has become an educational village. Technical education is being integrated into academic curriculum. Smaller learning environments are being explored. Each administration has their own vision of the future of education and each of our recent high schools is reflective of these different explorations.
At Newton South High School the installation of photovoltaic cells and gray water captures brings the science program to life studying the building itself. At Belchertown High School the concept of the school as the center of community life is animated in the auditorium used for community events and the gymnasium used daily by the communities' seniors. At Tantasqua Regional High School the Technical Division courses are being integrated with the academic courses to bring down barriers between the two groups and allow academic students to explore career options. At Greater Lawrence Technical School the move to team teaching and academic clusters is reflected in the current renovation and expansion project. In each of these cases, DRA, as designers, has worked with teachers, students, parents and school administration to explore the full possibilities of the building project, rather than viewing it simply as an architectural exercise.
