William J. Dean Technical High School
Holyoke, MA

The technical high school was designed to accommodate 1,200 students, although enrollment was only 830. Meeting the future needs of a growing population was a requirement of the city of Holyoke. The city's main street bisects the 18.2-acre site and the contours steeply slope toward the Connecticut River, thus creating unique design challenges. The resolution involved spanning Main Street with a pedestrian concourse and stepping the building to mimic the undulations of the site. This bridge provides safe access for students traveling to the public facilities from the academic wing and has also become a local icon- the City's proud southern gateway.
