Essex Public Library
Essex, CT
Initially designed by Best Joslin in 1978, the original library, was bursting at the seams after 24 years. Located in a quaint waterside community, its popularity and ability to provide services and programs for the community were in direct conflict with the lack of space. The original library had no conference room, young adult area, quiet reading areas or periodicals room. By acquiring a neighboring property the library was able to do 100% expansion, which more then doubled the capacity. The design challenge was to maintain the treasured existing style and vernacular, and compliments the surrounding structures
