Phoebe Griffin Noyes Public Library
Old Lyme, CT

Even though a stack wing was added to this 1898 existing historic library in 1937 and a children's wing added in 1961, the current collection and community needs far outreached the building's capacity. The 1898 and 1937 portions were architecturally compatible and were retained in the new design.  The new design required a single level for all public functions and the demolition of the 1961 wing. The site was extremely tight and had to incorporate both a well and a new septic system.  Ken Best designed a new glazed colonnade that was recessed from the historic library to connect the new addition to the existing library. The colonnade maintained the prominence and individual identity of the original building.  This design element met the desire of the local and state historic commissions, both approved the addition at the first submission.
