Work began as a feasibility study to explore various options for expansion of the existing main library. It was critical for the design to integrate the major portions of the existing 35,000 S, but was deemed inadequate due to a number of barriers within the building, Further, another addition to the existing building would have been substandard and would reduce parking even further on the limited urban site. The option for a new building was evaluated and endorsed at Town Meeting. The existing library was demolished and a new 81,000 SF library with a basement level garage constructed. The new facility has many comfortable seating areas, the general collection located on one floor, a children's room that includes a story hour area as well as a special craft room; quiet study areas, and community meeting space. It is designed to take advantage of the surrounding area including views of the parkland next door as well as a spectacular view of Town Hall across the street.
