Performing Arts Spaces

On all our auditoriums and Performing Arts Centers, Drummey Rosane Anderson works closely with the client so we can adapt the design to user expectations while balancing aesthetically pleasing elements with the demanding technical aspects of the space. Performing Arts design must also take into consideration adequate and varied support spaces to allow the main performance space to be used efficiently. Issues of circulation and choice of interior finishes to put the audience in a receptive mindset for the performance are also incorporated into the space. The overall design requires a variety of expertise, which is why DRA's ability to coordinate the disciplines required (acoustical, stage, lighting, technical operations) coupled with our understanding of the theatre experience will ensure a positive experience for the audience.

Our most current project is the new Performing Arts Center in Duxbury, MA. The Performing Arts Center will have 1000 seats in the auditorium with professional level stage and fly space, a technical gallery and catwalk grid and a thirty-person orchestra pit. Attendant spaces include scene shop, dressing areas, rehearsal rooms, ticket office, exhibition spaces and administrative offices. The Center will serve the the town, community groups and the nearby school campus.

In addition to the Duxbury project, DRA has many other Performing Arts facilities. The Fine Arts Center at Regis College in Weston, MA has seating for 650 in its professional level main theater. The building also contains an art gallery, black box theater, scene shop, choral rehearsal space, practice rooms, exhibition space and a grand lobby that is used for events.

Another interesting aspect of our Performing Arts facilities is that many of them are housed within school settings, yet serve as the focus of performance groups within the community. Our two most recent high schools, Belchertown and Tantasqua Regional, have 750 seat auditoriums with all the attendant amenities and support spaces that are found in stand along performing arts centers. This brings interesting issues such as securing the remainder of the school during after hour community use and providing spaces for intermission (serving of refreshments, selling tickets) within the spaces that are used every day by the high school.
