Duxbury Free Library
Duxbury, MA

Ken Best was hired for the adaptive reuse of a former school into a new home for the library.  The three story, 37,600 SF School building was renovated into a “new” library of 41,000 SF.

The most significant issue in the adaptation of the  former school into a library was the floor loading capacity.  The library functions on three levels with a large open stair connecting the main two floors.  Features of the library include hand painted murals, and large spacious rooms throughout.  The lower level houses a large meeting room that is able to function independent of the library, with an adjacent coffee shop.
