“In working with DRA, I am impressed with their ability to listen to the diverse programming needs of a technical high school facility and accurately translate them into a highly constructible, quality architectural design consistent with the budget limitations."

Ray Kinghorn,
Sr Project Mgr, ARCADIS,
Project Manager for
Emmett O’Brien Technical High School

The existing vocational technical school, situated on a tight site has had several additions, but has essentially remained unchanged in its current layout since being built in 1955.

The scope of work includes new technology, HVAC, plumbing, roofs, windows and sprinklers. The cafeteria will be converted to a library/media center. There will also be a significant addition to the vocational program and the academic/administrative wing.

The design team worked in close collaboration with the Client (Department of Construction Services), Department of Education, School Administration and Owners Construction Manager to develop a design approach that permits “renovate as new” condition of the existing as well as completing additions to the building while fully occupied with minimal impact to the educational process. Early in the design phase, this phasing approach was assessed for the potential cost impact and reconciled with available project budget.  A major portion of the proposed new space will be constructed towards the rear of the existing site, on the existing playfields as well as at the front entrance ofthe school.
