Staff Sergeant James J. Hill Elementary School
Revere, MA

The Staff Sergeant James J. Hill School in Revere completes an ambitious Master Plan initiative, including 5 new schools that started 16 years ago with a district wide study completed by the Revere Public Schools. The Master Plan solved issues relating to desegregation, enrollment capacity and aged buildings, well beyond their useful life expectancy.

The Hill School, the last in the program, faced a challenging obstacle just in finding an appropriate site. The Site found, and ultimately used for construction, resulted from a creative collaboration with another project going on simultaneously including the renovation of a City Stadium on the contiguous parcel. By consolidating and maximizing recreational uses on the entire campus, space adequate for the school program emerged.

The State of the Art Facility expresses its progressive attitude with the use of a contemporary palette of materials, including terra cotta and cement fiber rainscreen and vast expanses of curtainwall on the exterior, composed in large primary forms that delineate different interior program uses. The interior too, is expressed with modern forms, materials and details that reinforce the importance of technology and modernity in the educational curriculum.

The Building is organized in a radial pattern with classroom wings, one each for the upper and lower “schools” radiating from the core which is comprised of the core gathering spaces, the Media Center, Gymnasium, and Cafeteria. These spaces all have large areas of glass which bring a lot of light into the school and connect the students to the surrounding community of which it is part. The Main Lobby has large expanses of glass at the main entrance which frames a view of the old McKinley School which this school replaces. There is artwork throughout the school, including in the two-story high space at the lobby, which demonstrates the schools theme of integration and diversity.
