Weymouth High School
Weymouth, MA

"DRA has proven to be prepared and able to deliver the best in direct architectural services. They also provided the professional and personal guidance that was needed to marshal others and move forward a large and complex project that was made even more challenging in light of the very short time line that was required."

Robert D. West
Former Superintendent of Schools
Weymouth Public Schools

Weymouth needed to build a comprehensive high school to consolidate all students on one campus, but the projected enrollment and associated cost for new construction exceeded their budget.  A solution evolved to use an existing building and construct a new one of similar area, on the same “campus,” where the program and facilities could be physically separated in two buildings.

The new facility serves the Math, Science & Technology programs and houses vocational shops, the library and a cafeteria.   The Arts & Humanities programs are allocated to the renovated facility. A raised connector allows access to existing services (mechanical, loading dock, access doors in the existing building) while providing significant circulation between main lobby spaces in each building.

The scale of the facility and the constraints of the existing building’s plan worked with the preferred departmental organization. Each department is configured around a centrally located planning/workroom designed to encourage communication between educators and provide a casual setting for student and teacher interaction. Amidst the departmental classroom modules are spacious lobbies, group meeting areas and technology hubs.

Most components within the new building serve both educational and community functions.  One noteworthy resource is the 70-person planetarium where public exhibitions are regularly held.
